Remember the good old days when Windows Explorer still worked? Yeah… the days when you could delete a file and it would actually disappear from view! We took it for granted that any changes in Windows Explorer would reflect immediately.
THE PROBLEM
As if the massive change from Windows 7 to Windows 8 was not enough to drive any average computer user insane, there is now also that nagging little issue regarding files and folders not updating (or refreshing) as it should.
Has the following ever happened to you?
THE FIX
To manually refresh a window, one could right-click and select the Refresh option, or press the F5 key. However, it is really annoying as well as confusing when changes are not reflected in real time.
Furthermore, since it is an erratic error one can easily forget to refresh. Countless hours can be lost looking for files that are temporarily hidden for no apparent reason. It is one of the most disruptive software issues I have ever dealt with.
One solution that I came across online is to create a registry key as follows:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Update]
"UpdateMode"=dword:00000000
In other words, go into the Registry (regedit.exe), and in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control, create a key called Update. Within that, make a DWORD value named UpdateMode with value 0.
This solution worked for my computer, and might help you as well.
